Flower Mound and Marcus each notched big non-district road wins on Tuesday night.

Marcus’ Lady Marauders defeated Arlington Lamar in three games, 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 and Flower Mound’s Lady Jaguars won a dual match at South Grand Prairie knocking off Garland Naaman Forest, 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 25-22, and the home-standing Lady Warriors, 25-21, 25-12, 25-19

Flower Mound’s record stands at an impressive 7-1, while Marcus sports a 7-3 mark.

The Lady Jaguars downed Naaman Forest in four games without the services of middle blocker Sarah Rudeen, who was sidelined with a wrist injury.

Flower Mound coach Marci Brinkman said her team overcame some mental lapses in the opening match to win twice.

“We played well against Naaman Forest,” she said. “There were points where we were making too many mental errors though.”

Outside hitter Cassie Gonzales led the Lady Jaguars with 14 kills and 20 digs. Outside hitter Rachel Cunningham registered nine kills, five blocks and 17 digs. Middle blocker Kayley Harrison had nine kills and six blocks while defensive specialist Taylor Benner came up with 19 digs.

In the win over South Grand Prairie, Brinkman said her team played well but let their opponent set the pace of the match which is something they can’t let happen.

Middle blocker Kristen Rice paced the team with seven kills and added four blocks. Hitter Colleen Duncan had six kills and four blocks. The Lady Jaguars played solid defense with Victoria Kidzus (15 digs), Johnson (14 digs), and Feczko (12 digs) each picking up high dig totals.

The Lady Jaguars return to action on Friday night hosting Fort Worth Nolan Catholic.

Chances are if the Lady Marauders return to the playoffs against this season they could meet the Lady Vikings in the second round of the playoffs.

Last season, another school from Arlington, Martin ended Marcus’ playoff run. The Lady Marauders will get a chance for revenge when they host the Lady Warriors on Tuesday.

“We played really well tonight,” Marcus coach Cristie Liles. “We served aggressively. We ran our offense the way it should be run. It was a total team effort.”

The Lady Marauders also didn’t have to fight themselves during the match as they had done in earlier matches this season.

“We were in much better control during this match,” Liles said. “I think they are figuring out the concept of not playing ourselves.”

Middle blockers Emily Maher and Brittany DeWeese had big nights up front. Maher led the squad in kills (11) and blocks (12). DeWeese contributed nine kills and 10 blocks.

Setter Jenna Miller has 20 assists and 21 digs. Libero Kaleigh Wright came up with a team-high 23 digs.

Next up for the Lady Marauders is a trip to Allen for the Texas Open on Friday. The event begins with pool play. The teams in Marcus’ pool are Lubbock Coronado, Plano East and Richardson Pearce.

Lady Jaguars win Bronze Division at Ryan Classic

Saturday was a nearly perfect day for Flower Mound’s volleyball team, according to Brinkman.

Everything the Lady Jaguars did during the day turned out right as they won a pair of games to take the Bronze Division championship at Denton Ryan Kickoff Classic.

The Lady Jaguars beat Irving, 25-10, 25-11, 25-9, in the semifinals and then downed Mesquite Horn, 26-28, 25-145, 25-17, 25-7, to take the title.

“Saturday was an awesome day for our team,” Brinkman said. “We played at our level the whole day.

“We were blocking well. We served well. We were just on our game. The communication was there and everything was clicking for us.”

Gonzales was the lone Lady Jaguar to make the all-tournament team.

Lady M’s finish fifth in consolation bracket

After falling to District 6-5A foe Coppell in the three games on Saturday morning, Marcus reeled off three wins to finish fifth in the consolation bracket of the Duncanville Tournament of Champions.

In the opener on Saturday, Coppell downed Marcus, 18-25, 25-19, 27-25, in a match that saw the Lady Marauders serve receive and service game break down in the second game.

“We lost that second game because we couldn’t do what we needed to do,” Liles said. “We couldn’t pass or serve.”

Liles said her team was able to regroup because they know that losing a non-district match means nothing and that they will be ready to play when district play opens.

“We know going into district we will be fine,” she said.

The Lady Marauders defeated New Braunfels Canyon, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18, in the next match, then they banged out wins over former District 8-5A foes Allen (25-19, 25-21) and Plano East (25-20, 27-25) to finish fifth in the consolation bracket.

“I thought we really played well,” Liles said. “We were down 9-2 to Plano East and came back to win. We just have to stop digging ourselves into holes.”

Behind the play of DeWeese and setter Lauren Cooke the Lady Marauders finished 15 out of a field of 38.
