The Marcus volleyball team isn’t showing signs of slowing down.

The Marauders extended their record to 15-5 on Tuesday night thanks to impressive wins over both Colleyville Heritage and L.D. Bell in a duel match. Marcus beat Bell in the first match 25-11, 25-21, 26-24 and then returned to the court with a dominating 25-10, 25-11, 25-18 win over Colleyville. The wins helped Marcus snap a two game losing skid.

“It was definitely a good night for us,” head coach Cristie Liles said. “We were in a rhythm for the entire night and we got a chance to play a lot of different girls and see a bunch of different combinations. It was definitely a good tune up heading into Pearland.”

The team started the Pearland Invitational on Thursday, though no scores were available at press time. The tournament – which runs through Saturday – is Marcus’ third and final preseason tournament. They’ve already played at tournaments in Duncanville and Allen – finishing with a combined 11-4 record. The team has just one non-district tilt left against Arlington Martin on Sept. 4 before its District 6-5A opener against Carrollton R.L. Turner.

For right now, Marcus looks pretty solid.

Against Bell, Emily Maher finished with 13 kills while teammate Brittany DeWeese recorded eight kills and six blocks. Jenna Miller finished with seven aces and 25 assists. Rachel McCormick had 16 digs. Against Colleyville, Maher had 12 kills, three aces and seven blocks. DeWeese had eight kills and Miller had 27 assists.

Last week, the team finished fourth at the Allen Tournament, losing its last two matches to Coppell and Plano West. Lyndi Johnson made the All-Tournament team.

“Our goal in that tournament was to do better than we did at Duncanville,” Liles said. “We are still having issues with mistakes. But I couldn’t ask for much better from the girls.”
