MARCUS GYM

Marcus High School

Edward S. Marcus High School opened in 1981 and is located in Flower Mound, Texas (about 25 miles north of Dallas). We are one of five high schools in the Lewisville Independent School District. Marcus is well-known for its high standards and preparation of college-bound students. Our students consistently perform well above the state and national averages for ACT and SAT scores. This past year, more than 79% of students taking AP exams received college credit. Marcus annually has a high number of students who receive recognition in the National Merit Scholar program.

Marcus had its first varsity volleyball team in 1986. Since then Marcus has had 5 different Coaches and produced:

3 Regional Quarterfinalist teams

2 Regional Semi-finalist teams

5 Area Championships

5 Bi-District Championships

10 District Championships

3 Co-District Championships

A Marcus Tradition - The Midnight Mile

Each year the University Interscholastic League sets the date that schools can begin practices for volleyball season. At Marcus we begin tryouts for the season at 12:00:01 am on this date (usually a Monday). This means that we gather on Sunday night before midnight at the track on the south end of the Marcus campus. The girls run their qualifying mile while family and friends cheer them on. Spectators bring signs, banners noise makers and a spirit of support for the girls. All the girls run the mile and the upperclassmen run additional required events. Over the past years this has been a wonderful event to officially start the season and look forward with great anticipation to another great year of Marcus volleyball.

The Suzanne Catchings Motes Alumni Game

In 2008, the annual Alumni Game was re-named The Suzanne Catchings Motes Alumni Game in memory of Suzanne Catchings Motes. Suzanne coached volleyball at Marcus from 1997 to 2001. Coach Motes started the Marcus Alumni Game tradition. The Alumni Game is the first volleyball game of the season for the Marcus Marauders. Former volleyball alumni return to Marcus to challenge the new varsity team.

During her five years at Marcus, Coach Catchings Motes led the Lady Marauders to 3 District Championships and 1 Bi-District Championship. Her overall record was 103-69 and 55-17 in district play.

In March of 2008, Motes lost a 10 month battle with cervical cancer at the age of 37.

In memory of Coach Catchings Motes, donations will be collected at the Alumni Game for the American Cancer Society.
